Info point 15: The walk
The garden
In front of you, you can see the meadow Žlinja, today an open space used for various events. In the past there used to be a large garden here surrounded by a stone wall. Such an open position called for additional security of the garden so smaller semicircular towers (torions) were erected on the northwest and northeast corners of the fence wall. One smaller part of the garden belonged to the captain, while the rest of the garden was used by some of the settlement inhabitants.
Appearance of the garden
The detailed appearance of the garden is visible in a recently discovered colored drawing from the 16th century stored in the Venetian State Archives. It is noticeable that the fertile land yielded an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Vineyards occupied its northern side, while the rest of the garden was reserved for planting grain.
Rose water
In the 17th century, the beauty of the garden was mentioned by Bishop Tommasini of Novigrad-Cittanova, in his settlement description, and the large rose bushes and various types of trees shown in the drawing certainly contributed to this impression. It is safe to assume that the "homemade" rose water occasionally sent to Morosina in Venice was made from the fruits of this rose garden. Along with the depiction of a mulberry tree, walnut trees can also be recognized in the drawing. The planting of mulberry trees was later encouraged by the owners of the feud themselves. The walnut tree was valued for its fruit, but it was also recognized as good quality furniture material.
